Chula Vista is home to one of four private colleges in San Diego County and is host to Southwest College, a community college that serves nearly 19,000 students annually.  In 2012 the City of Chula Vista acquired a 375-acre parcel of land in Otay Lakes with intent to develop a University Park and Research Center; however and unfortunately, the master developer backed out of the project and since then State Assemblymember Shirley Weber proposed that the state open a California State University satellite or extension of campus at the site with hopes of becoming a full university.
